The Work of the Editors

There are four editors--based in Canberra and Sydney--in the Translation and Text Division. Each provides editorial and technical support to translation teams in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

The editors receive translated text in various forms (electronic, published, handwritten). They then enter the text and formatting codes to a computer and check for consistency in spelling and layout. This text is then printed out and returned to the translation team for review and checking. The editors also insert any maps and/or illustrations required, check copyright and send the final copy to the printer.

The work of the editors is unusual--the editors do not necessarily read or understand the languages that they work with. When working with non-English translations the editors simply check the translation for consistency in spelling and layout. The editors then mark the inconsistencies and return the translation to the field for review. The translators and translation consultant then review the translation and the inconsistencies, in the field.
